History

French Department of Nouvelle-Hollande (1808-1888)

-French Republic successfully beat British Isles to claim it

-colony destroyed by British during French Wars > Second French War (1821-32), but returned following its end

-largely an outpost consisting of Lorient [Perth]and colony is technically just a department of France

-low levels of settlement, as France doesn't want to let go of population, and instead it's largely other Europeans who go there and though they end up speaking French, in the end it's not much of a colony

-this changes following discovery of gold around Calgourlie by colonial authorities in 1874

-results in settlers from around the world coming in, but mostly people from australia

-colony still run like a french department, causing dissatisfaction among english-speaking people coming in

-establishment of french schools deep into gold country

-talk of separating gold country and either making it a british colony or independent, including port of esperance

-british fear independence, even for an instant, will result in it becoming nucleus of independent state encompassing new south wales

-france makes links from calgourlie to lorient to prevent it

-also brings in Chinese miners to balance out against the Anglos, protects them from attacks

-large-scale Irish, indigenous intermarriage

-later intermarriage with Filipinos who are also brought in

-long-term they end up speaking French, being Catholic

-during French Wars > Fourth French War (1880-4), German fleet headed towards Lorient is defeated in significant Battle of Cape Naturaliste by multiethnic force

-in the end, with new confidence and especially with perceived weakness of French in region following the war, this results in reforms of state

French Governorate-General of Nouvelle-Hollande (1888-1954)

-new unofficial anthem, Army of the Nations, put to the tune of this

-special laws implemented which makes nouvelle-hollande semi-autonomous, makes english co-official

-france seeks to make as many french people as possible, makes sure catholic church weaponized to catholicize english-speaking catholics, catholic school board speaks french only

-also brings in calvinist missionaries from geneva and the like to francify presbyterians and prevent anglicization of protestants

-successful in that almost all catholics and some protestants speak french by the modern day, with a bit more francophones than anglophones

-politics polarized on linguistic lines (but with oft cross-lines in coalition building) and dominated by one grand coalition mostly

-with both french and british empire collapsing, grand coalition is in freefall and new party issues makes push for independence, and it happens, gg becomes minister plenipotentiary

Republic of New Holland (1954-present)

-form of government is literally just old form minus gg (so probably directorial)
